The beginning of separation; Suikoden the animation episode 4 review (Spoiler Free)

Episode 4 shifts away from the faster‑paced rhythm of earlier chapters, leaning into deliberate, character‑driven storytelling and mounting political tension.

When u are a Pascifist then suddenly, a war broke out

The episode opens with Jowy, Riliu and Nanami reuniting with Victor and Clint inside Muse — one of the largest cities of the City‑State Alliance, ruled by Lady Anabelle. A sharp, charismatic leader and long‑time acquaintance of Victor, Anabelle is also familiar with Genkaku, Riliu and Nanami’s step‑father. She gathers leaders from across the alliance to address the growing threat of Luca Blight and the looming Highland invasion, urging every city‑state to unite their forces for a coordinated defence. The meeting quickly stalls, however: Gerudo of the Matilda Knights is openly unwilling to commit troops, and most other leaders hesitate to risk their own lands. This moment lays bare the alliance’s most critical flaw: deep‑seated disunity, even when facing a common, brutal enemy.

How i met your mother...i put a knife behind my back..telling her to cooperate

Anabelle’s aide Jess soon assigns Jowy and Riliu a high‑stakes covert mission: infiltrate the Highland encampment near Muse to survey enemy supplies and gauge how much time remains before an attack. Provided with stolen Highland uniforms to blend in, the pair accept the task and leave Nanami to watch over Pilika. The mission nearly falls apart when they stumble into Princess Jillia’s main camp tent. Jowy draws his knife, hoping to coerce Jillia into hiding them, but Jillia voluntarily agrees to protect the two boys from the searching Rowd. She recognises Jowy and Riliu from their near‑execution, knowing they are innocent scapegoats created by her brother Luca, and reveals Luca sees her as an enemy too — we hold back the key detail restraining Luca to protect this major story spoiler.

That moment when a bigger chad entered the room

The episode then delivers a sharp, electrifying tonal shift. Rowd waits outside Jillia’s tent, clearly suspecting intruders are hidden within. Jowy makes a self‑sacrificing choice to create a diversion, ordering Riliu to flee while he holds off their pursuers. Just as Jowy prepares to unleash the power of his Black Sword Rune, a massive hand seizes him: Luca Blight. This scene cements Luca’s fearsome reputation: even against Jowy, bearer of one of the powerful Runes of the Beginning, Luca’s overwhelming raw strength and tenacity overpower Jowy without using magic at all, leaving Jowy completely defenceless.

Dark sword eh..taste this Hikari no Ken

Riliu shares the devastating news that Jowy remains trapped in the Highland camp. Finding Riliu stumbles back to Muse alone, Victor immediately confronts Jess in a fit of anger, furious that Jess dispatched Jowy and Riliu on such a life‑threatening assignment without first seeking proper approval. This outburst highlights Victor’s protective bond with the two boys, while also amplifying the gravity of the mission’s catastrophic outcome. The episode closes with the iconic, game‑faithful final scene: Riliu, Nanami and Pilika stand together at Muse’s city gate waiting for Jowy. Overwhelmed with uncertainty about his fate, they still hold fast to quiet hope that he will survive and keep his promise to return.

Who is that cute girl with a dog..eh jowi?

This episode’s most noticeable shortcoming is its uneven lead‑character balance. Jowy is given consistent, layered depth: his inner reflections, intentional decisions and willingness to sacrifice drive nearly every major plot beat. Riliu, by contrast, is mostly positioned as an observer of events, reacting to circumstances rather than shaping them, with far less space dedicated to exploring his core beliefs and motivations. Though this slower, build‑oriented chapter successfully builds suspense and establishes vital foundations for later conflicts, this narrative imbalance often makes Jowy feel like the story’s true emotional heart, rather than the official protagonist.
