Haikyuu Episode 2 Review

Episode Summary

After the first introduction episode, we see Hinata meet with his former rival turn ally Kageyama. Still remembering their last meeting, Hinata says that he is disappointed with the revelation that Kageyama happen to be his schoolmates. After all, how can he defeat his rival if they are in the same school?

You can take him on chess baka

Hinata asked why Kageyama did not choose better school since he was already known as a proficient setter. Hearing his question, Kageyama could not hide his anger and disappointment since he was already rejected.

 my condolences now cry

Before thing got escalated, Daichi, Tanaka, and Suga appeared to them. They are the senior members of the Karasuno High School Volleyball team with Daichi acting as the leader.

Introducing the Jack of all stat, the lancer, and the idiot

Apparently, they were watching the last year volleyball preliminary and all of them were impressed with both Kageyama and Hinata (though they kind of forgetting Hinata at the beginning)

The newbie is the protagonist you lose already
When Hinata told Tanaka that he wanted to be the team ace, Kageyama’s cynic remark made them arguing once more and then Hinata challenged him in a one on one passing match.

By then the teacher came to the gymnast and asking them whether they have quarrel between the team. Nevertless, they still done the man-to-man competition with Kageyama pose as the server and Hinata as the receiver.

Kageyama told Hinata that he was different from last year and then started his serve by doing an extremely fast jumping serve. In shock, Hinata could not receive the fast attack and asked for another take.

New game available Kiss the Ball

In the second take, Hinata’s managed to take the ball though literally it went to his face.

No my beautiful hair
It’s not over though since the ball also head to the standing teacher which later exposing his actual baldy head. Later on the teacher asked Daichi and the other member to hide their discovery.

...and you don't want to make me angry HULK SMASH!!!

As a Captain, Daichi could not take bitter rivalry in his team since they could create disruptions in the team harmony. He threw them outside and asked them to their fix their attitude before he could accept the two protagonists in the team.

Ok that was unexpected coming from him

After the captain closed the door, they continued the argument about which position are better. Hinata insisted that Spikers are cooler and they made the offensive look amazing while Kageyama, complete with his out of character moment, said that Setters are the main force inside a volleyball team. Later they challenged their senior in the match with Daichi then proposing them to form a member of three with Tanaka against another two newcomers with him.

Later on it was revealed that Daichi acknowledged that as a team Hinata and Kageyama may fill each other weaknesses and made the Karasuno high school as a major force in Volleyball tournament.

Episode Review.

The second episode did not impress me as much as the first episode because it feels more like a calm before storm episode. Finally we learn the identity of the mysterious watchers from the first episode as the Team seniors. Daichi is the captain and he was calm mannered person but I think he would be scary when angered. Suga serve as the kind and understanding senpai and Tanaka seems to fit as the joke character complete with his brash and cocky demeanor.
The episode also gives more comedy with the teacher’s flying wig landing in Daichi’s head as well as Kageyama funny gestures regarding to the setter position. Alas both of them were done in the other past animes (well though not in the same fashion) and I was not actually laughed at the comedy.
Regardless, the anime still moves at the good pace and we can expect new characters in the next episode as well as another match in the episode three.
