Haikyuu Episode 3 Review

Episode Summary

Hinata, Kageyama and Tanaka trained in the gym to prepare the match with the new freshmen when Suga came to the court and watch their training. After watching Kageyama gave a toss to Tanaka, Hinata asked for the special toss from the prodigy setter. However, Kageyama told Hinata that he had no intention to give any toss to him. After all, he still considered Hinata lack the ability to win the game and he blindly told him to just stay away from both Tanaka and him.

The best disappointment face ever

During the school break Hinata trained with Suga in the schoolyard. Suga tried to cheer Hinata by telling him that he would give toss to Hinata as he was the official setter of Karasuno. However, the already dejected Hinata could not sway the image of Kageyama rejection. Later on, Suga told him why he kept getting in Kageyama face and why he would not try to avoid confronting Kageyama.

precise and up to the point remark from Mr. King

Hinata explained that he considered Kageyama as the bitter rival and as now he was the biggest mountain that he must conquered. With calm voice, Suga told him that even though Kageyama would be the greatest enemy Hinata encountered, as a team He could become Hinata’s most powerful ally. Accidentally, Kageyama overheard their conversation.

 Introducing Kageyama the monster

While Kageyama asked Hinata to do some practices, the new freshmen introduced themselves to the seniors.

Hinata keep wondering why Kageyama always become irritated if he accidentally call him king since the word “king” seems like a good nickname. During their practices, the freshmen appeared and one of them, kei tsukushima , a tall blond bishonen with a very intimidating character. He purposely taunted Kageyama and he even called his nickname too.

I forgot to mention you here so it is your chance to introduce yourself dud

Hinata told Kei to stop intimidate “the king” and he would spike over his head in the next match. After introducing themselves, the freshmen went back to their home and both Kageyama and Hinata continued the training with newer spirit to win the game.

With the practice match getting closer, the duo increased the intensity of their training. Hinata’s undefeated spirit made him tried very best to take every Kageyama pass. Kageyama finally acknowledged Hinata undying spirit and considered him as an essential team member to win. After realizing that Hinata could take a very difficult pass, Kageyama gave him a toss and then Hinata cheerfully spike the ball.

For Hinata the toss was a sign of acceptation from Kageyama and his achievement in getting Kageyama trust through his hard work

Episode impression

This week the episode was very nice compared to the last one. First off all, we could see the new freshmen and their personalities. I see Kei as a character with difficult personalities but we knew that Kageyama is similar. I thought their character would get most of the development in the upcoming episode. Second, We can see that Hinata spirit allows him to work extremely hard and eventually Kageyama started to appreciate him.

The episode furthers the development of Hinata and Kageyama bonding through their training. Kei came at their training and tried to annoy them. He sound likes a cocky and intimidating characters and with the personalities, it was no wonder that he developed problems with the other protagonists especially Kageyama.

One important thing to note is that in the end of the episode we see further development of the interaction between the protagonists. The episode displayed Hinata’s growing passion to become better player. Kageyama also displayed better character development because no longer he considered Hinata as a burden and he was developed from the self centered person into a new entity who considered that other person is not just another tool to achieve victory but more like a comrade in arms
